Astronomy Open Night 2025: A Universe of Discovery Awaits

Get ready, space lovers—Sydney’s most dazzling night of stargazing and science returns this September! Whether you're a lifelong astronomy enthusiast or just beginning to explore the cosmos, Astronomy Open Night promises an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Growing every year since it began in 1988, Astronomy Open Night at Macquarie attracts thousands of visitors, and is one of the largest public science events in the Southern Hemisphere.

This year, be captivated by the surprising science behind everyday phenomena in our Physics and Chemistry Magic Shows. Through dazzling displays and clever experiments, you’ll uncover how energy, motion, and matter shape the world around us. Macquarie University’s leading scientists and researchers will also return to share fascinating insights through a series of engaging talks.

Young explorers can spark their curiosity at the Junior Science Academy, where hands-on activities make learning fun. Older adventurers can dive into the world of coding and game design with interactive experiences led by Macquarie’s computing societies in the ever-popular Cosmic Arcade.

New this year is an exciting Virtual Reality experience, where you can float through the International Space Station or design your own solar system. It’s a hands-on exploration of space that’s sure to inspire curious minds.

Travel from the edge of our atmosphere to the far reaches of space with our immersive Planetarium sessions and guided tours at the Astronomical Observatory. Marvel at the beauty of distant galaxies indoors, then step outside to observe real stars and planets through telescopes in our Telescope Park, guided by Macquarie astronomers and volunteers.

And for those with an eye for the stars, the Capture the Cosmos astrophotography competition invites you to vote for your favourite celestial image in the People’s Choice award.

Delicious food and drinks will be available throughout the evening, with a variety of vendors from the University’s food court serving up tasty treats.

Come rain or shine, Astronomy Open Night will light up your imagination. Join us for a night of discovery, inspiration, and cosmic wonder!
