Are you an ECR looking to share your ground-breaking research?
Look no further! Mark your calendars for 23 November and get ready to participate in this year’s Early Career Showcase, an event which offers a unique forum where innovation, creativity and impact in research take centre stage.
Audience registration for the ECR Showcase 2023 Finals is now open, and the Showcase agenda is available!
Broaden your network by showcasing your work to a diverse audience including industry professionals, senior researchers, and fellow ECRs. Whether you find yourself at the stage of designing, data collecting, or disseminating your final findings this is your opportunity to show others within and beyond your field why your research matters. The Early Career Showcase Competition offers a unique opportunity to establish connections and future collaborations with individuals who can shape your career trajectory.
Break free from the conventional presentation style and explore innovative ways to present your research. Whether it's through multimedia, visual arts, or on the live stage, captivate the judges and attendees with your originality and imagination.
Refine and strengthen your communication skills. Whether you choose to present in a traditional or non-traditional format, you'll leverage your abilities to distil complex ideas into engaging and accessible content. Whether it's publishing papers, securing grants, or communicating with a broader audience, these abilities will serve you well in future endeavours.
Good news, in case the previous reasons weren’t enough to convince you, we are pleased to share that our esteemed judging panel will award a cash prize to go towards your research for best presentation in each category. An assortment of food will also be served on the day. So buckle up, polish your hypotheses, and get ready to compete for a chance to win - the possibilities are endless!
In fact, recognising the breadth of research being conducted across our campus, this year’s ECR Showcase offers a unique opportunity to participate in your choice of three categories:
Research Pitch
This part of the showcase offers a unique opportunity to "pitch your research" on the live stage. Finalists will be challenged to present their work in three minutes with a maximum of three slides (no title no acknowledgements).
Research Gallery
Did you see something amazing under the microscope? Did you discover a faraway galaxy? Does your research breathe life into artistic expression? Sometimes a picture can speak more than 1000 words. Finalists will be challenged to distill their research down to one picture to be showcased on a print in A2 format + a 100 word blurb to accompany the image research (please note that this is not a poster in the traditional sense).
Research Reels
With the rise of short-form content, we challenge you to showcase your research on the “world wide web”. Can you captivate an audience in no more than 60 seconds and become the next viral video? Finalists are encouraged to create their video using TikTok, Instagram or YouTube – show us that you are the future of research!

Last year, 12 excellent ECRs presented their groundbreaking research to the wider University community. Speaking at the event, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Performance and Development) Amanda Barnier said: “Congratulations to all the finalists from across the University. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to hear about your research, support you in every way we can, and watch you thrive. At Macquarie, we believe that by cooperating, collaborating, and coordinating our research, we can become more than the sum of our individual parts and solve complex problems we cannot solve alone. Our early career researchers are crucial to the success of this endeavor; their innovative research shows they are open to consilient conversations and solutions."
