Forensic Accounting Specialist Online Course

Forensic accountants are highly skilled in analysing and preparing financial information for a court of law. Forensic Accounting is a field that requires a combination of accounting, auditing, law and investigative skills and knowledge. 

As part of the requirements to become a recognised specialist in Forensic Accounting, the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance, Macquarie Business School in partnership with the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) is offering an eight week online course in the form of a set of modules covering the requisite knowledge with the application of theory to practice. 

The online course has been built specifically to meet the needs of CA ANZ members (and non-members) who want to become specialists in forensic accounting, recognised for their advanced skills and knowledge in niche areas of their profession. It is also available to CA ANZ members and non-members who wish to undertake the modules for CPD purposes. It will consist of the following four modules: 

  • Module 1 - Forensic accounting and the legal system 
  • Module 2 - Investigation engagements 
  • Module 3 - Loss and damage and other dispute engagements 
  • Module 4 - Forensic accountants and the court 



2023 Intake Important Dates 

Enrolment period: Thursday 5 January - Wednesday 1 February 2023 

Online study commencement: Monday, 6 February 2023 - Friday 31 March 2023

Assessment options: 

  • Online assessment: Monday, 3 April 2023; or 
  • Portfolio interview assessment: Monday, 3 April - Wednesday 5 April 2023 (by arrangement) 

Course Fees

CA ANZ Members: 

  • members undertaking individual modules for CPD purposes incorporating an online assessment - AU $375 per module (including GST). 
  • members pursuing specialisation who must undertake all 4 modules incorporating an online assessment - AU$1,500 (including GST). Alternatively a Portfolio Interview assessment is an additional AU $500 (including GST). 

Non CA ANZ Members: 

  • non-members undertaking individual modules for CPD purposes incorporating an online assessment - AU $425 per module (including GST).  

 

About the Course 

By the end of the online course it is anticipated that participants should be able to: 

Module 1

Forensic accounting and the legal system

  • Describe the structure and key characteristics of the legal systems  
  • Differentiate between litigation and common methods of alternative dispute resolution methods 
  • Identify key steps and concepts involved in civil, criminal and administrative procedure 
  • Explain aspects of the law of evidence relevant to forensic accounting engagements 
  • Apply legal, ethical and professional obligations relevant to Chartered Accountants performing forensic accounting engagements 

Module 2

Investigation engagements 

  • Prepare and manage an investigation plan 
  • Identify and manage various types of evidence, having regard for the concepts of evidence integrity and chain of custody 
  • Prepare for and undertake an investigative interview 
  • Understand the use of investigative tools such as background research, data analysis and forensic technology 
  • Appraise investigation reports and issues related to their preparation and use 

Module 3

Loss and damages and other dispute engagements

  • Outline legal principles relevant to the quantification of damages 
  • Apply techniques commonly used in the quantification of damages 
  • Differentiate between damages and other financial remedies 
  • Explain considerations related to the specialised areas of insurance and family law disputes 
  • Appraise expert reports and issues related to their preparation and use 

Module 4

Forensic accountants and the court 

  • Explain the role of the forensic accountant in the courtroom or tribunal 
  • Evaluate procedures for adducing evidence in court or other forum 
  • Demonstrate an awareness of courtroom etiquette and factors relevant to effective courtroom communication 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the special nature of quasi-judicial roles such as Special Referees, Court-appointed experts and expert determinations 


The online course will be delivered on an online learning platform hosting various resources including: 

  • Readings taken from textbooks, journals, websites and other sources 
  • Interactive discussion forums 
  • Review questions 
  • Self-study activities and questions 

The online course facilitators will contact all members enrolled in the online course in the week prior to commencement to ensure that they are set up on the online learning platform. 

At the conclusion of the course, you have the option to undertake an online assessment or a portfolio interview assessment (by arrangement with member at an additional cost). Please note that the assessment dates are subject to change and will be confirmed closer to the date.
