Associate Professor Dr Lise Barry

Dean of Macquarie Law School
Macquarie University

Lise’s research has a particular focus on the human rights of older Australians. Her current research is centred on the rights and decision-making abilities of older people in Aged Care and topics related to guardianship, powers of attorney, elder abuse and decision-making rights.

Lise provides professional advice and training to lawyers, mediators, health care providers and other professionals working with older Australians. She is also an accredited mediator and a member of the NSW Guardian Ad Litem panel, representing people who lack the capacity to instruct a solicitor or to represent themselves in NSW Courts and Tribunals.

Professor Carlos Bernal-Pulido

Commissioner of the Inter-American Human Rights Commission, Former Justice of the Colombian Constitutional Court, Professor of Law University of Dayton, Macquarie University

Carlos has been nominated by the Colombian Government to serve as a Commissioner of the Interamerican Human Rights Commission 2022-2026. He has been justice of the Colombian Constitutional Court. He has held academic positions at the University of Dayton, Macquarie University, and the University Externado of Colombia. He is a widely cited scholar in the fields of comparative constitutional law, and constitutional and legal theory.

Professor Michel Tison

Dean of the Faculty of Law & Criminology
Ghent University

Michel Tison is Professor in banking and capital markets law at the Financial Law Institute, Ghent University (Belgium), where he graduated in law (1990) and obtained a PhD degree in law with a thesis on the European internal market for banking and financial services (1997). He teaches courses in domestic and European banking and securities law. He has published extensively in these domains, but also in the field of company and insolvency law. He was a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh in winter 2001, the University of Bonn (2005) and Bond University (Australia, 2008). He stayed in Oxford University as an Academic visitor in Spring 2013.

In 2014, Michel Tison was elected Dean of the Faculty of Law and Criminology, currently serving a second 4 year term.

Since 2005, he acts as ‘assessor’ in the Legislation Section of the Belgian Council of State, which advises both the federal and regional parliaments and governments on draft bills, decrees and regulations.

Michel will introduce the keynote session, providing some thoughts on the role and responsibilities of financial institutions in the climate change conundrum

Dr Madeline Taylor

Senior Lecturer at Macquarie Law School; Deputy Director of Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Innovation and Transformation (CENRIT); and Honorary Associate at the Sydney Environment Institute, Sydney 

Dr Madeline Taylor is a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie Law School, Honorary Associate at the Sydney Environment Institute, and Climate Councillor for the Climate Council. Madeline specialises in Energy and Natural Resources Law and specifically on the intersection between energy regulation, energy policy, property, and commercial law. 

Her research advances a novel examination of transitioning energy regulation from a comparative and socio-legal perspective, including the strategic governance of energy and the fragmentation of ownership rights between the state, corporations and landholders. Madeline has published widely in energy law and her current research focuses on the law concerning petroleum and renewable energy conflicts, landholder rights, and the protection of sensitive land uses. 

She has advised government bodies, industry and NGOs on issues relating to the energy transition, energy regulation and policy and has provided expert submissions and advice to the NSW Government, World Bank, NOPSEMA, and the Independent Planning Commission.
